Biography:
Éowyn, Lady of Rohan, first appears in *The Two Towers*, the second volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings*. She is the niece of King Théoden, and daughter of his sister Théodwyn and Éomund.
Growing up in Rohan, Éowyn experiences loss early in life when her parents die. She becomes responsible for caring for her ailing uncle, Théoden, while he is under the influence of Gríma Wormtongue. This leaves her feeling trapped and yearning for a more active and significant role than the expected duties of a noblewoman.
Éowyn is a skilled warrior who seeks glory and a meaningful death in battle. Forbidden from joining the Rohirrim in the War of the Ring, she disguises herself as a male rider named Dernhelm. She ultimately participates in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where she confronts and slays the Witch-king of Angmar, fulfilling a prophecy that no man could kill him.
After the war, Éowyn finds healing and love with Faramir, Steward of Gondor, and chooses a life of peace and service rather than pursuing further glory in battle. She becomes the Lady of Ithilien, finding fulfillment in helping to rebuild and restore the land.
